Family Room Styling

One of my favourite things to do in our family room to switch up how things are looking is to update our throw pillows! Playing with textiles is such an easy way to freshen up your space. It can completely change the vibe. A popular question over here is how to pick out pillow combinations so we are going to chat all about it today an how it can impact your space! There is also a highlight on my instagram (@houseofhire). where I chat more about this too and give examples in the video.

One of the first things to chat about is this sofa. I love starting with a neutral base and this sofa is just my favourite. I custom designed it with Kavuus which is a Canadian brand and absolutely love how it turned out! Check out this post if you missed when I first shared about it 🙂

Their team also decided to add it to their selection as they loved it so much. We called it the “Loren” and it’s now on their site for purchase.

One of my favourite things about this sofa is the deep bench style seat cushion. It’s so cozy and comfortable. The side arms are a perfect height for layering in all the pretty pillows!

These pillows are all from Tonic Living which is also a Canadian brand and they are awesome. They have an amazing selection of neutrals and prints and there is just nothing better then getting a beautiful pillow set up on your sofa.

When picking throw pillows think about colour, pattern/texture and scale! These are 3 things that will really take your pillow game to the next level. Think about always having a grounding solid, something with some texture or interest and then a good pattern. I like to mix my patterns but making sure that they are both different in scale. Pick one larger pattern such as a stripe and then another that is a bit smaller and discrete.

Starting the pillow stack with the largest pillow in the back closest to the arm of the sofa ideally a 24×24 or 22×22.

Then building out from there move slightly smaller in size. This helps create a great layered look and is extra cozy to lean on. It’s best when the sofa is neutral so a soft cream/white/beige or grey as it gives you so many colour options for pillow combos. Remember to have fun with your textiles as they are a great way to bring personality in!
